Mathematics

SPS aims that each pupil becomes confident in their use of number through a programme of study that includes both traditional and modern techniques. In the early years concepts are reinforced by the use of apparatus and games. Children are taught basic number bonds, tables and mental techniques, which act as a springboard to their learning later in the School. Throughout their time at SPS, pupils are encouraged to become mathematical 'thinkers' and use their number skills to help solve problems. As well as providing stimulating challenges this serves to emphasise the importance of mathematics in everyday life. This is further encouraged by Year 6 pupils entering the Primary Maths Challenge set by the Mathematical Association. The use of ICT within the curriculum helps to consolidate principles and enable the pupils to develop programming skills. In Years 4 - 6 the children are taught by teachers who specialise in mathematics. They cover all the areas of the National Curriculum; number, shape and space, handling data, using and applying mathematics, as well as being thoroughly prepared for their entrance examination at 11+. |
