Pupils begin Latin in Year 5. They are given a lively introduction to the subject through the modern ‘Minimus’ course, which combines a mix of amusing stories, grammar support and historical background. Their book tells the story of a real family who lived at Vindolanda, close to Hadrian’s Wall, at the end of the first century AD.
The children can relate their own lives and experiences to those of the Romans and gain a meaningful insight into a different culture and time. The course also develops language awareness and helps pupils with the basics of English, as well as foreign languages. Emphasis is placed on the identification of Latin roots to uncover word derivations.
Pupils are encouraged to consider how literary and archaeological evidence can teach us much about life in Roman times. Roman and Greek myths also intertwine in the family’s story.
Pupils continue their study of Latin and Classical Studies throughout Year 6. Our aim is that every pupil should enjoy their first taste of an ancient language; and for those who go on with Latin at their secondary school, they will have a good grounding on which to build with confidence.
