Year 6 - Field Trip To Derbyshire - Monday 19th - Friday 23rd May

23rd May 2008

Everyone was looking forward to the Year 6 Field Trip as the group gathered in the Leisure Centre Car Park. The journey to Derbyshire went smoothly and following lunch in Darley Dale, the party walked on Stanton Moor where they saw the Nine Ladies Stone Circle and the Cork Stone among other features. It was then on to Magpie Mine and finally the Ravenstor Youth Hostel, having just enough time to settle-in before dinner. After a short rest, it was time for an evening stroll in Miller’s Dale!

On Tuesday we visited Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet where the group met Victorian owner Mr Tyzack and his housekeeper, Mrs Naylor. In the afternoon we climbed Mam Tor and the children made a field sketch looking across the valley from Hollins Cross towards Castleton. Although the ascent was hard work, the views from the top were magnificent and everyone felt a sense of achievement.

On Wednesday and Thursday the party split into two groups. One visited the Speedwell and Treak Cliff Caverns in the morning and then walked through Dove Dale after lunch. The other group went to Peak Cavern, which has another, rather rude name that the teachers do not allow to be used, and Peveril Castle in the morning. In the afternoon they went to Matlock Bath and visited the Mining Museum, panned for 'gold' at Temple Mine and took the cable car to the Heights of Abraham, before calling at the Great Rutland Cavern.

On the final morning the party visited walked from Stoney Middleton to the Plague Village of Eyam before having their final picnic lunch at Monsal Head. It was then time for the long drive home.

As ever, it was a splendid week and our thanks go to Mr Walker, for his excellent organisation, and the other staff who attended the trip; Mr Evans, Mrs Lane, Mr Roberts and Mrs Thapar, plus parent helpers, Mrs Harston and Mr Sanders.
